Report this message By Ian Hinchliffe on 10th Oct 2009I joined Watton Cricket Club in the early 1990s, Les being the captain, my first game was a disaster, we had to play at the High School, lost the toss, we managed to muster a total of 21, like some of the others,I scored0. Les still upbeat, said lets give it a good go. They managed to get the score which wasn't surprising, but we did take7 of their wickets though. Again Les remained upbeat, and as usual he was right, we ended up getting promoted.

Report this message By Peter Gilding on 10th Oct 2009Everyone at Watton Hockey Club will miss him. He umpired for us for many years. He was one of those rare umpires out there that you could have a bit of banter with, and he'd know it was a bit of fun, and didn't send you off for an early shower. However, look out if you weren't joking.
Many a Sunday morning we have shared a car to a rediculously early hockey match on some lumpy bumpy grass pich. We'd look at each other and think, what are we doing??? It's Sunday morning for Pete's sake. Then... 'same again next week then'?
Itis so sad that this lovely man was taken from us so suddenly, I could have done with one more pint with him, discussing 'that' decision.
He would be very proud of Alex, Laura and Jo today. You did him proud.
Will miss you Les. Love Vicky and everyone at WHC.

Report this message By Peter Gilding on 7th Oct 2009I played Football with Les at Shropham on Sunday's and he managed East Harling for a brief period in the Early Eighties whilst I was there too. He was someone that both myself and my contemparies looked up to as someone who had been there and done it.
I went on to play higher grade football because of his words & encouragement and enjoyed much success which I attribute to him.
Also remember him as an excellent cricketer with time for everybody.
My Condolences to his Family & Friends

Report this message By Shirley Chard on 5th Oct 2009Words cannot convey the sense of loss. We saw him so recently that it is hard to accept we will not share his company and humour in the future.
We are however very thankful for the good shared memories we have.
